She Said…She-Shed!

This idea started from wanting to create a multi-purpose guest room. Knowing I don’t often have guests sleep over, it was important for me that the space could be used for other purposes, so this project began with a vintage sofa bed and grew from there, eventually becoming this vintage-themed she-shed/guest room! This video follows the process of designing this room and acquiring its pieces. This space started out empty so the process of selection was quite the treasure hunt! Nicknamed 'The Four C's, this room was designed to embody the cozy, calm, classy charm of various bygone eras.

I found this 9-panel mirror on marketplace. It is 36 x 36 inches from the highest and widest point. Frameless and beveled, this piece exudes art deco charm. It was heavy, so we reinforced it to the wall with toggle bolts. This mirror stood out to me more than other options because it paralleled some of the other items, like the panels of the window blinds and the glass paneled chandelier. The elegant borderless frame was the deciding feature compared to alternative options with heavy wooden or resin frames.

Custom Rotating Music-themed, Media Stand

This rotating stand features an antiquated music score on each panel and is accented by detailed drums that act as the feet and the top of the display. As a music lover, the theme of music is sprinkled throughout the space.

90s Chair with some 70s Flair

Easily one of my favorite editions is this 90s chair. I got it for free with some serious damage to its upholstery and top cushion, one talented upholsterer, and too many hours on eBay (finding this cute fabric from the 70s), later, and this chair is crushing its new lease on life! Check out the transformation below!

This room was always going to double as a designated guest room, so something less temporary than a futon seemed like the way to go. With so many dark wooden items around the room, choosing the right accessories for the sofa was important. I lucked out on this as the sofa was in excellent condition and was half my target budget. After an initial mismatch of textured white cushions, I realized it wasn’t the use of light color that created a jarring appearance, but not having anything break it up to take the edge off such a bold sofa color and bright white - hence the final cushion arrangement featuring a variety of patterns, textures, shapes, and colors. I leaned into the quirk of the bumblebee-esque color palette with a set of fun and unique cushions. This did wonders for breathing more life into the room while the distinctive wingback sofa design kept it all rooted with a vintage aesthetic.

Pro tip: Consider doing a digital mock-up! After the first pillows flopped, I decided to test my shortlist of pillows by placing photos of them on top of a photo of the sofa before making any new purchases. This really helped me when I was undecided.

This is the latest edition added for the summertime! This chocolate colored pedestal fan is a very solid piece with a lamp-like base. It features classic detailing from top to tail. After searching through a lot of older fans, I settled on this more modern piece with classic design elements for both function and safety reasons. Remember, a lot of painted items pre-dating 1978 may be finished with lead paint or have other safety issues - for example, a lot of the vintage fans I found with metal blades had large spaces in the fan’s cage that could cause injury.

Pro tip: When in doubt about safety or function issues on older items, opt for a vintage look or add your own distressed or classic aesthetic.
